Artist Statement

First Draft

Bold and bright colours illustrate a world straight from my imagination. I use digital drawings of a fantasy world to reflect upon the female narrative and celebrate feminine heroes.

Felisandariel is an elf, and the protagonist and namesake of my graphic novel. She is a lowly warrior on the run from her own kind, who finds friendship and courage with her enemy. Her journey explores what it means to be a strong woman. The world she inhabits is torn apart by war but the narrative focuses on the effect of violence, fear and hatred on individuals and their relationships.

Second Draft

As an illustrator I use colourful digital drawings to create a fantasy world that celebrates the female narrative and feminine heroes. My illustrations follow narratives and I use storytelling as a method of reflecting upon relationships, interactions, and perceptions.

The graphic novel I have created is a small piece of a much larger project and serves to introduce the reader to Felisandariel and the world that she inhabits.

Her journey explores what it means to be a strong woman. Felisandariel is not just central to the narrative, the story is centred on her. She is the driving force of the story, she controls the narrative, and she changes the world around her.
